Raise the Barn - Capital Campaign

The Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program (NVTRP) faces a new chapter in its existence. It has the opportunity to create a permanent home by transforming Little Full Cry Farm in Clifton, Virginia into Northern Virginia’s first comprehensive therapeutic horsemanship center. Already serving the most number of therapeutic riders in the region, a permanent home will provide NVTRP with the physical infrastructure to gradually be able to

  • double its ridership to 150 students by 2012,
  • expand to include at-risk youths and recovering military service personnel,
  • offer a full-range of complementary therapies and resource network to its riders and their families,
  • customize training programs for specifics needs within the greater communities NVTRP serves,
  • create a Northern American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA) regional training center focusing on certifying a new corps of instructors.

Phase I--Completed

In the Fall of 2008, NVTRP took the first step to realizing this dream to become the leader in Fairfax County for equine-assisted therapy and instruction. Through the generosity of donors, it was able to purchase 5.5 acres of the 17 acre Little Full Cry Farm it currently leases in the Clifton/Fairfax area. The farm, originally an equestrian school and boarding facility, provides ideal topography for pasture and the elements of the future needs. Phase I was made possible in part by the TL Cline Family Foundation.

Phase II--$3 million (January 2009-June 2011)

Complete purchase of the farm

Build Indoor Riding Arena: A 200 x 100 ft indoor arena complete with viewing areas, accessible mounting areas, and grooming and tack area will enable the program both to be offered year-round and in all weather and provide the necessary space to accommodate growing ridership and expanded services. Make Site Improvements: Expand the parking lot and entranceway to accommodate the traffic requirements for 150 riders per week in accordance with Fairfax County requirements.

Phase III and beyond

Future phases of the campaign will include building a 20-stall barn; expanding the staff in line with increased ridership; increasing financial aid for those riders in need; refurbishing the existing pool to offer aquatic therapy to riders; and creating sensory riding trails.
